Pall Mall cigarettes

Pall Mall cigarettes are manufactured by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and out of USA by British American Tobacco.

Pall Mall brand cigarettes appeared in 1899 by the Butler & Butler Company, trying to introduce the premium cigarettes to the upper class, especially for young people, who are full of energy and live in big cities. The Pall Mall name comes from a 17th century game in which a player tries to drive a wooden ball with a mallet down an alley and through a raised ring using as few strokes as possible; originated from palla and malleus, or ball and shovel.

Later, in 1907, Pall Mall was purchased by American Tobacco with the sale of Butler & Butler. The new owners used the premium brand to try out innovations in cigarette design, like the "king-size" (now the usual size for cigarettes at 85mm), a new way of stuffing tobacco that had to make cigarettes easier on the throat.

Pall Mall reached the peak of their popularity in 1960, they were the the number one brand of cigarettes in America. Risky gambles in design had paid off and so the company introduced more novelties like "longs" or 100mm cigarettes (once again creating a standard, this time for long cigarettes). Pall Mall lost its number one position in 1966 when they could no longer compete with Winston cigarettes advertising campaign "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should."

In 1994, Pall Mall and Lucky Strike were obtained by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation as the former American Tobacco company dropped its tobacco brands. At that time, Pall Mall was already behind with design, remaining one of the few cigarette brands to contain no filter. Finally, in 1987, new, filtered Pall Malls came up. Brown & Williamson merged with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 2004, with the surviving company taking the name, R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. R. J. Reynolds carries on to make unfiltered and filtered styles of Pall Mall for the U.S. market. British American Tobacco produces and distributes Pall Mall outside the U.S.
