Cohiba is a brand for two kinds of high quality cigar, one manufactured in Cuba for Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company, and the other - in the Dominican Republic for General Cigar. Cohiba cigars were launched only in 1968, and quickly became the most famous brand of the Cuban cigars. They were marketed widely beginning in 1982, though originally Cohiba was developed as a medium bodied protocol cigar for presentation only by officials of the Cuban government. Producers began Cohiba era with Cohiba Lancero, the Corona Especial and the Panetela, with the Esplendido, Robusto and Exquisito added in 1989.
The name cohiba comes from the Taino word for "tobacco". Cohiba cigars are filled with premium tobacco which has undergone an additional fermentation process; it is a type of cigars as well as a brand.
Cohiba cigarettes were introduced by Habanos S.A. of Cuba to diversify from its famous cigar brand names. They are produced only of a blend of Cuban black leaf tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region. Cohiba cigarettes are called cigarillos negros (black cigarettes) and they have specifically strong taste.
The design of the Cohiba cigarette packaging is easily noticeable and recognizable as it reflects the design of the Cohiba cigar logo.
